The receding floodwaters in New Orleans have revealed more problems for those whose homes weren’t destroyed: mold. But your home doesn’t have to be flooded to develop a mold problem. Even the smallest amount of moisture can allow mold spores to take hold. CNN/Money offers five tips for combating mold:
- Use your senses – Follow your nose to a mold problem. Not only does it smell musty, but it is a strong allergen, causing irritated eyes and respiratory problems that may be your first warning sign.
- Skip home testing – Home testing kits are expensive and inconclusive. Your money is better spent hiring a professional inspector.
- Do it yourself – If your mold problem is relatively small, you can clean up yourself with soap and water, a bleach solution, and a good brush.
- Check your AC – Central air systems get moldy, so replace the air filter once a month.
- Prevent mold growth – Stop moisture at the source. Repair leaky roofs and plumbing, use a fan in the bathroom or open a window when you shower, and keep your home’s humidity below 60 percent.
